3 digital campaigns that bring in leads without big budgets

Most small businesses across East Africa do not need to spend millions on advertising to get consistent enquiries. What they need is to be visible in the right places, with a clear message, and a straightforward way for customers to reach them. Here are three approaches that work specifically in this market.
1. WhatsApp broadcast lists with a simple weekly message
If you have a business WhatsApp and a list of past customers or contacts, you already have something valuable. A well-written broadcast message sent once a week, sharing a promotion, a tip, or simply a reminder that you exist, costs nothing and keeps you top of mind. The open rate on WhatsApp messages is far higher than email. Most people read them within minutes.
Keep it short. One topic. One call to action. If the message makes people feel informed rather than sold to, they will stay on the list and they will refer others.
2. Facebook and Instagram ads targeted at your local area
You can run a Facebook ad targeting people within 5km of your business, in your age bracket, for as little as 20,000 UGX per day. For a restaurant, a clinic, a gym or any business that depends on local foot traffic, this is one of the most cost-effective things you can do. The ad does not need to be a video production. A clear photo of your product or space, a one-line offer, and a WhatsApp link is often enough to get people through the door.
The key is running the same ad for at least two to three weeks before changing anything. Most campaigns are switched off too early, before the algorithm has had time to find the right audience.
3. Google Business Profile, properly filled out
Many businesses across East Africa have a Google Business listing that was claimed years ago and never updated. No photos, no hours, no description. When someone searches for your category near them, a complete listing with recent photos and a clear description will appear above businesses that ignored theirs.
It costs nothing to update. Add photos of your space, your products or your team. Write a two-sentence description of what you do and who you serve. Set your opening hours. This alone can drive meaningful walk-in traffic from people searching on their phones.
What to do next
Pick one of these and start this week. You do not need to do all three at once. WhatsApp is the easiest to begin because you have the contacts already. Once that is running, add a Facebook ad. Then tidy up your Google listing. Three months of consistent effort on these three channels will produce more enquiries than most businesses expect.
